Jamaica Plain is a Boston neighborhood that was previously a part of Roxbury. In 1851 Jamaica Plain was seceded to West Roxbury, which in 1874 was annexed to Boston, subsequently Jamaica Plain became a Boston neighborhood. Today, the Jamaica Plain neighborhood has a population of nearly 40,000 and is part of Suffolk County, Massachusetts. The area has a substantial number of parks most of which are part of the Emerald Necklace of parks that runs through Boston. The 19th Century brought about streetcar transportation and Jamaica Plain was one of the first suburbs to incorporate the streetcar as a mode of transportation. Some popular sites in Jamaica Plain include Olmsted Park, Jamaica Pond, Arnold Arboretum, and Franklin Park where the Franklin Park Zoo can be found.
